~I received a copy of “In a Heartbeat” for review. Opinions and stories are my own.~
Last week Laura Doherty’s third album, In a Heartbeat, was released. After her previous two albums won both Parents’ Choice Gold and Silver Awards, it’s not surprising that this one was a hit right out of the package. It’s a very upbeat acoustic folk album a lot of heart. Doherty has a really lovely voice that ranges from melodic to soul pop and it’s easy to see why kids get caught up in her sound.
There are 13 songs on the album, some of which are just silly and others that have a deeper meaning to them like It’s Okay to Be Shy, which happens to be my favorite. It’s about being proud regardless of how small the child’s voice might be and that no matter what someone is there to listen. As a mom of a child with language delays, it really hit my heart and soon became the one song I loved singing to my son.
My tot, however, loves See Ya Later Alligator, which is a really upbeat silly song that gets him hopping all over the place. He loves that saying, “See you later alligator, after while crocodile”; which always gets him giggling. It’s the last song on the album of course, but that just means you get to start it over again!
Even the art on the album is eye catching for children. With all the little pictures to show what the songs are, even kids who can’t read yet can still pick out their favorite ones. You can tell that everything about Doherty’s music is for the kids and her love of sharing music with them can be heard in each song.
In a Heartbeat also features guest artist Glenn Kotche from Wilco! And of course since he was rated 40th Best Drummer of All Time, he shows off his skills on Drum Kit behind Doherty’s vocal harmony.
