The story of how I, Julian Carter, and my precious two-year old son, Stephen, left Atlanta Georgia and found ourselves on a white sailboat, tossed about like a cork on a raging sea off of Australia’s northern tip in 1963, is harrowing.
But it pales in comparison to what happened deep in the jungle where I was taken as a slave by a savage tribe unknown to the world. Some places dwell in darkness so deep that even God seems to stay away.
There, my mind was torn in two by the gods of the earth. There, one life ended so another could begin.
Some will say I was a fool for making the choices I made. But they would have done the same. They, too, would have embraced death if they knew what I knew, and saw through my eyes.
My name is Julian and this is my story. But more, it is the story of my son who was born to change the world.
From deep in the impenetrable jungles where New York Times bestselling author Ted Dekker was born and raised, comes OUTLAW, an epic adventure of two worlds that perhaps only he could write. Full of harrowing twists, sweeping violence, and wild love, Outlaw takes us beyond the skin of this world to another unseen.

Over the years my love of reading and my masters degree in Library and Information Science has lead me to read a lot of books. This was my very first Ted Dekker book. All of my opinions were from reading this book alone. I did read the book jacket so that was my only basis for choosing this book to review.
I am always looking for new authors to read. This one jumped out at me because I thought the summary sounded interesting and exactly the type of book I would enjoy. I was right. I found the beginning to be a little slow but it was well worth the build up to get into the meat and bones of the book.
Julian is a woman that has faced heartbreak. Her mother and father both died as well as her husband when her son was but an infant. Every since the day her son was born she had a reoccurring dream that took her far away from the safety of her home, money and sisters. She felt the pull of that dream so strong she found herself and her son on a boat that capsizes in a storm off the coast of New Guinea.
She wakes after the storm and her son is gone. She is picked up by a local tribe and they take her back to their world. In this world she is in the middle of a war and war is not kind to her. She has to learn their ways or die. Right when she starts to feel comfortable in this new life she is faced with a devastating blow but a twist of fate changes the book to follow another’s perspective.
All the jungle characters are well written that you want to know more even about the “bad guys.” The twist is not a totally shock but instead a welcome one to make the reader think and enjoy the pace of another character. This book really makes you listen to your own thoughts and definitely makes me want to read another Dekker book because I thirst for more!
