Do you feel like your kids kind of stop learning in the summer – kind of like they’re at a standstill until the next school year begins? I know that’s how I feel with my kids. Sometimes it’s hard to get them to even want to read a book because they’re just so focused on summer vacation and all of the fun things that they want to do. That’s why I was excited to hear about a new program that the Chicago Museum of Science rolled out with.
Chicago Museum of Science Summer Brain Games
In what’s known as “Summer Brain Drain, kids can lose one to three months of learning over the summer. That’s quite a lot of learning lost! Luckily, with the help of Chicago Museum of Science and their online Science program Summer Brain Games, your kids can keep their thinking caps on all summer long! Summer Brain Games is absolutely free and it sure sounds like a lot of fun. Through this program, your kids can keep learning during the summer and have fun while they’re doing it!
Experiment kits will be available online each week. Kids of all ages can participate – some might need adult supervision. They’re offered in English and Spanish too! When you register for Summer Brain Games, you’ll also get a free ticket to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry – how fun!
This week’s activity is “Weather the Summer” where you can assemble your own weather station. The project should help you understand how meteorologists predict the weather. You’ll make a rain gauge, wind vane and an anemometer. These tools will help you to collect data and maybe you can even predict weather yourself!
The experiment for week one was all about balloons. You’ll be able to make your own breeze and learn about Newton’s third law of motion. You can even race with your friends!
There will be different activities each week, all summer long. I just signed up and my kids are looking forward to our experiments. Little do they know, they’ll be learning at the same time!
