Disney's Oz The Great and Powerful DVD/Blu-Ray Review

Whatever your rating system is for movies: two thumbs up, 5 stars, A+, must see, 100 rotten tomatoes, etc., I would rank Oz The Great and Powerful all of those! I absolutely loved this movie.

“When Oscar Diggs (James
Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from
dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot. Fame and fortune are his for
the taking. That is until he meets three witches: Theodora (Mila Kunis),
Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he
is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of
Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before
it is too late. Putting his
magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity and even a bit of wizardry,
Oscar transforms himself not only into a great wizard but into a better man as
well.”

Confession: I have never, ever, ever, never, been a fan of the original Wizard of Oz because I am a huge chicken. In fact as an adult, I still get too scared to watch the whole thing, but I have been told the story many times. Oz The Great and Powerful was not scary at all, in fact there were some pretty funny parts. The flying monkey, Finley, was one of my favorite characters (another confession: I love CUTE monkeys). The flying monkeys in the movie scare the life out of me. Finley is just too funny and super cute! My favorite lines are when Oz offered Finley a banana. Finely replies:

Finley: “Just cause I am monkey you assume I like bananas?”

Oz: “Well yes, do you want a banana?”

Finley: “What do you think? I am monkey, of course I want a banana.”

I really liked the China Girl too. She was so feisty and tough, the complete opposite of delicate and fragile china. She is from village of China Town, where everything is made of china. Her village gets attack and Oz finds her and he helps her to be able to walk to again (important part in the beginning of the movie is related to this scene). Her and Oz become friends and she continues the journey with him.

Tell me, who can’t help but like Glinda, the good witch? Glinda is played by Michelle Williams – she is fantastic (yes I loved Dawson’s Creek too)! Glinda is a kind and compassionate witch that watches over and protects her people. She can see right through Oz’s charming ways and smooth taking. She knows deep down he is a good person and she helps him uncover it.

My review couldn’t be complete without mentioning Oz! James Franco was so entertaining and so cute! His dimples and twinkle in his eyes makes him so charming. Oscar Diggs, aka Oz, is a traveling magician and gets himself into trouble (mostly with the ladies). He usually smooth-talks his way out of his troubles, but he is launched in the magic land of Oz. The fate of the kingdom in his hands and he has to find the man he truly is before it is too late.

My kids loved Oz The Great and Powerful too. They watched it several times and had friends over for many viewings too. All of their friends were thrilled to watch it as well. With all the time we spend at sporting events (practice, games and tournaments), I love that we can download movies to the iPad. Oz The Great and Powerful is one of those movies that has been added to our collection on the iPad!

The Blu-Ray + DVD + Digital Copy are on sale today! I recommend you run out and purchase one right away. I have to admit, I really like the digital copies you can purchase these days.
