Here is the official movie trailer. It really sets the mood for the film. Please note the trailer includes a different narrator that is in the film because of a partnership with Omega on the YouTube channel.
Big Sis at 4 years old is very inquisitive and we love all things ocean related around here since we are surrounded by it here in Florida so I was super excited to let her watch this documentary, Planet Ocean with me. She was hooked from the opening scene. She was constantly asking “what’s that” and I even let her stay up late to watch it.
I will warn you that even though the ocean scenes are breathtaking so are the horrible scenes of shipyards in Shanghai. I immediately wanted to swear off horrible China made crap for good. It was full of such good information that Husband, Big Sis and I all want to do more to protect the oceans. The movie does not make humans feel bad for what is happening but rather lets them know what is going on since most of us have no idea.
Here are just a few factoids for you from the movie:
- It takes 1000 years for a drop of water to complete the cycle in the ocean currents.
- Sailfish is the fastest fish in the ocean.
- Cuddle Fish protect their eggs by hiding them in coral.
- Every second there are two more people to be fed.
- Fishing sustains 500 million people
- Some deep sea nets measure 40km or 25 miles.
- Of the top 50 ports int eh worlds 11 are in Asia.
- There are 400 marine areas that have been declared dead.
- Protected marine areas are less than 1% of the ocean.
That is just a fraction of the information put in this movie. It was really great to watch and really shows you how important our oceans are to all of us. With Earth Day coming up this is a great movie to show your kids or even a class to give them a better understanding of Planet Ocean.
