When I’m packing my daughter’s school lunches, I want to make sure the food is good for her body, but I also want her lunch to be good for the environment, and my wallet. Using paper napkins and plastic bags creates tons of garbage, and quickly becomes expensive.
I started my quest for a “green” lunchbox with WAHM made cloth napkins and reusable snack bags. 3 years later, I’m still using the cloth napkins in my daughter’s lunch, but the bags didn’t fare as well.
I then found Lunchskins reusable bags, which became a staple for packing sandwiches and snacks. We have a few of the sub size bags for my husband’s lunch too, and they keep items fresh all day! We use Thermos funtainers to pack hot foods like soups and macaroni.
The Leaflet Tight bento box I purchased is a bit small to pack enough food for my daughter, but we love to use it to make homemade “lunchables!”
Most recently, I discovered Laptop Lunches bento boxes and the dual compartment lunch tote.
It’s the perfect size for a healthy lunch, and I love that the containers are perfectly proportioned to help me pack a balanced lunch. The lidded containers allow me to purchase large containers of yogurt, fruit and applesauce at a lower cost (and with less waste) than individual packages. Something about the box makes lunch time extra fun for her as well!
Have you found “green” alternatives for your child’s lunch box?
