Our original Make A Plate is over 40 years old and is looking better than ever! It’s time to celebrate! After more than 40 years, Make A Plate is still our most treasured and beloved product – known to millions. When life seems strained by the hectic pace surrounding us, it’s nice to know that Make A Plate can preserve that special, happy moment-in-time for so many families and is something they will keep forever.
Makit began as the creation of Bob Hodges in 1969. One day a neighbor, who was a teacher said, “Wouldn’t it be fantastic to capture kids’ artwork on something useful, instead of it falling off the refrigerator and throwing it out?” With a background in plastics and dinnerware manufacturing Bob saw an opportunity to create a craft medium that children and parents would love. The Make A Plate was born. School teachers across the country continue to use our products for class art projects and family traditions have sprung up as generations create designs that become treasured heirlooms.
Ever since my little guy turned two and a half, I’ve noticed a big difference in his fine motor skills and the desire for him to create things. He’s a busy bee that wants to know how things are put together or how he can make something better. Most of the time, making a toy on my dining room table means drawing all over it with whatever he can get his hands on!
Makit Company started over forty years ago by Bob Hodges, after his neighbor, a teacher, wondered if there was a way to preserve kid’s artwork on something useful. Luckily for all of us, Hodges had a background in plastics and dinnerware making and the first official Make A Plate was born!
The Make A Plate is very easy to use. It arrives in a medium size box with a few blank pieces of paper cut into circles, a handful of colorful Crayola markers, and the envelope to send the drawing back in. At just under three, Sonshine doesn’t have a real grasp for drawing “things” as we see them. He always explains the drawings as he goes and there is even a correct way to hold them, but, his final masterpiece entitled ‘Dinosaurs’ has no real dinosaurs on it. But, it was his favorite drawing, so we sent it in to forever immortalize it on a plate! The whole process was a breeze. You fill out the form included in your kit, slip that with your child’s artwork into the envelope, and send it in! Not too long later, you’ll receive a plastic plate back with the exact picture your child drew on it! The plates are heavy, but not too heavy, so your kid can eat on them without the fear of them breaking if accidentally dropped. I can’t wait to buy a new kit each year to watch his progression as an artist. It’s also a fun idea to give to grandparents and aunts and uncles as gifts!
Makit is also the official licensee for Disney,
Disney/Pixar,
Girl Scouts, &
Crayola! They also offer other fun kit options like Party Kits, Photo Plate Kits, Character Platter, Character Bowls, and a whole lot more!
