Call Me A Nerd is a kid’s music project instilling confidence and leadership skills in children ages six through eleven (kindergarten ? 5th grade). This is the age when they are establishing their social position in the world around them. Through songs and music, we teach children to embrace exactly who they are, be it nerd, athlete, musician, or geek. We are picking up where Free To Be You And Me left off. When a child really gets to know and accept themselves, they walk strongly in this world. This personal strength can help them excel in social, academic and athletic situations ? and even disarm the bully.
Jonathan Grossman has dedicated his life to music. He started out in his own rock band (Dogwood Moon) and eventually became an award winning television composer of such shows as ‘Judging Amy’, ‘She Spies’ and ‘Joan of Arcadia’. Now as a father of two children, he has dedicated his talents to children’s music.
“In the recent past, I realized that I could be more effective by directing my music to a new demographic. I want to address those minds that don?t need to be changed but rather informed and nurtured to grow in a healthful direction.”
I’ve been really impressed with Call Me A Nerd. The lyrics are catchy, fun and also wonderful as a social learning tool and the music is upbeat and exciting for kids! Although it is unique, it has that same addictive beat as pop music kids like to hear nowadays, but with wholesome educational lyrics. I say ‘wholesome’ with the meaning of it not being about mature and otherwise adult situations that kids need not be concerning themselves with. Call Me A Nerd deals with issues involving school and society in a way that kids can relate to and should relate to; a positive reinforcement about personal strength, academic courage and of course – being okay with who they are.
Call Me A Nerd includes the tracks:
- Call Me A Nerd
- You Just Know
- Who I Am
- Monster
- I Believe in You
- Shine
- UR the Only 1
My favorite thing about Call Me A Nerd the song, is it sounds like a pop rock version of a school yard with kids singing “Na Na Na Na Na Na!” You can just vision little kids sticking their tongues out and singing, “Go ahead call me a Nerd!” It’s really empowering for kids that actually love to be academically strong. My other favorite song is Monster, which is about going to bed at night and being afraid of monsters in the dark. My toddler and I have so much fun with this song. Whenever it starts into the chorus about the Monster eating his feet I chase my son around the living-room and he laughs to bits. It’s a fun way to get kids to be less afraid of the dark!
What is really awesome is that he performs at schools! Check out this live show at Wildwood Elementary and how much the kids really get into the song!
The whole album took 9 months to create and Jonathan Grossman talks in his blog post “There’s a 9-month Gestation Period for Music Too” about how it is akin to being pregnant with an idea and it coming to fruition, having given birth to this amazing CD. I found that really interesting. It’s also nice hearing stories, he certainly has a knack for words as well as lyrics!
This is what kids music is supposed to be like. It’s encouraging, fun, deals with correct issues, enlightening and empowering; plus it is also great music so we as parents can really get into it with our kids. I honestly never thought I would be a parent listening to kids music all the time, but it’s bands like Jonathan & The NERDZ that make me a proud to share this genre and style with my family as well as our readers here.
