Bobby Graham is a twelve-year-old boy whose personal problems haven’t gotten in the way of his dream: to win the American Soapbox Derby Championship. With the odds against him – including his school foe and main competition in the race – Bobby is determined to prove himself with a personal best and unbeatable new self-confidence.
After the death of his parents in a car accident, Bobby Graham is sent to live with his Aunt and Uncle. The new atmosphere proves to be somewhat difficult as his uncle does his best to figure out how to be a parent and he immediately becomes the target of the bully at his new school. All Bobby cares about at this point is the American Soapbox Derby Championship, but his uncle thinks it’s a waste of time. However, Bobby finds an unlikely friendship in the town recluse, Jim, who sets about helping him fulfill his dream of winning the championship. Sometimes we find friendships in the least expected places.
This was a really beautiful family movie that had a very strong story. There are many lessons to learn from it, such as not judging others and to never give up on your dreams. The movie is set in 1976 and although it is Bobby’s dream to win the championship, it was originally his Father’s. This is his way of following in his father’s footsteps and keeping him alive. Not only do you come to see that Bobby really needed to be a part of the race, but that Jim also really needed a friend. You’ve Got a Friend brings together family, friendship and hope as well as shows that it can come from unlikely places.
You’ve Got a Friend stars John Schneider (?Smallville,? ?Hot in Cleveland?), Dylan McLaughlin (?iCarly,? Kicking and Screaming), Chase Ellison (Tooth Fairy, Unstoppable) and Bitty Schram (?Monk,? A League of Their Own). It’s the perfect movie for a family movie night and gives way to great conversation with your kids afterward!
