If you have visited a bookstore recently, you may have seen these adorable books on display in the kids section. I had first seen them on a stand at Barnes & Noble a few months ago and found myself reading them in the store to my son, although he was a little too busy with the train set to pay attention. The images of the odd friendships are what captured me. They were sweet, odd and almost human, how could you not want to pick them up?
I remembered them again when I was given the opportunity to review them and I felt so lucky. My niece and nephew were staying over during that time, so we had a lot of kids in the house when they arrived. At one time or another all the kids wound up picking up the books, even my son brought them over to me to read. My niece always wanted to read them before bedtime, I suppose the heart-felt stories inspired good dreams and she often would read them with her stuffed giraffe she picked up at the zoo and which I thought was adorable.
There are a lot more stories inside Unlikely Friendships for Kids, even the story of how the author had come to write them. At the end of each book it goes over words and phrases that may be difficult for some readers, the books themselves are meant for 7 and up, but little ones like it if you take the time to read them and explain the different words. There are also animal lists in the back with descriptions of the animals in the stories, which is a great teaching tool!
Unlikely Friendships For Kids is actually based off the best selling Unlikely Friendships book, this is just a more condensed version written specifically for kids detailing the best stories with companion photos. What I love about these books is that it teaches children that friendship knows no boundaries, that even if you are different from someone else in some way that it doesn’t mean you can’t be the best of friends. Sometimes the odd circumstances in life bring animals and people together in remarkable ways and it is a true testament to love that even those that should be natural enemies can sometimes create life-long friendships.
Now that we’re in “Back-to-School” zone, I think these books would be a remarkable gift to any child facing a new school year. School brings the challenges of new friendships, especially if they are entering school for the first time or moving into middle school; these stories would be a great start to the new school year!
