As most of you know, I’m getting married in July. We’re going to have a beautiful outdoor ceremony by the lake, then move into the backyard for the dinner and reception. Like most brides, I want my day to be extra special. My {soon to be} mother in law and I have been planning the decor like crazy and I’m sure a lot of our guests will be surprised with how beautiful you can make a backyard wedding!
I decided to do a Candy Buffet at our wedding for a couple of reasons. Our friends had one at theirs and it was just a perfect little touch. Since the reception is in our backyard, we will be inviting our neighbors and some of our friends who aren’t so close to the reception. Well I truly believe in feeding your guests, so I thought a nice little spread of appetizers along with a Dessert and Candy Buffet would be perfect!
I was in search of a nice glass dish and I found a nice assortment of dishes in the candle aisle at Walmart. They had many to choose from, but once I saw the giant Martini glass, I knew that was the one! I snagged that baby in the back up right away {the front one had a little scratch} and headed to the craft aisles in search of the single Elmer’s Painters Paint Markers.
I had no problem finding the Elmer’s Painters Paint Markers and chose the Silver and Gold right away. These are available in fine tip, medium tip, and chisel tip. I chose the medium tip in gold and fine tip in silver. For just $1.97 each, I’ll definitely be adding more to my collection once my Walmart gets more colors in!
I was feeling motivated and crafty yesterday, not to mention trying to be pro-active about anything and everything that I possibly can be with this wedding; so I gathered up my supplies and got to work.
I swear I’m not special, but sometimes I even wonder myself! The directions on the Elmer’s Painters Paint Markers say “With cap on, shake well before use. Depress marker point and hold on surface until paint flows.” Simple enough, right? I guess not for me, because I thought I must have grabbed broken ones! You really have to hold it on the surface {I used paper} for a good 30-60 seconds before the paint will start to flow. I’m not sure about every time, but definitely the first time make sure to do this! I felt really dumb because I was actually getting frustrated; hence the “Yay” in the photo above when the paint finally ran through for me!
I went into this project without an exact idea of what I wanted. I just knew there had to be flowers on it. That’s why I bought the little sparkly gems! You’ll have to excuse this photo, I had way too much light coming into my house while I was working on my candy dish. I put our names and wedding date on the base of the glass along with 3 little hand drawn flowers. I know I’m not the best at flowers, but hey, my wedding will now have my own personal touch! And, I’m sure my guests won’t be thinking “Oh her flowers look ugly”; instead they’ll think “Oh how cool, I wonder if she made this?!”
I started on the actual glass by doing gold hearts. Then I added a silver heart, overlapping the gold just a bit. This created the “double heart” effect. Then I placed my little jewels on the glass {which I found out were self adhesive, even better!} and drew flowers around the jewels; so the jewel was the middle of the flower.
I found it easier for me to work on the glass upside down, and even then I made a couple of mistakes. It’s harder than it looks to draw on curved glass! It was coming together nicely though. I had 3 sets of hearts, then 3 flowers {both silver and gold} would go in between those.
Once that was all done, it just didn’t seem like enough was on there, so I added 3 more sets of 3 flowers. This gave it that perfect touch that I was looking for. Not too much and not too little!
Here’s a shot looking down into the glass/candy dish from the top. While I am certainly no artist {as you can tell by my misshaped flowers and hearts}, I am very happy with how my candy dish turned out!
The personalized base makes this a keepsake that we will treasure for all times. After the wedding is said and done, I plan to fill this with river stones, put a small glass bowl on top of them, fill it with water and put floating candles inside. I think it will be beautiful!
And here is the complete finished project! I just love how it turned out. Pretty good for just going o a whim, with no specific vision in mind! It’s so much easier than it looks to #ExpressYourself!
