I have tried force. I have tried bribery. I have tried threats of violence, weeks, months and years of imprisonment and I even tried positive reinforcement, all to no avail. They still will not eat their vegetables. My kids are notoriously picky eaters, like will-only-touch-8-foods-with-their-forks picky. None of those foods being of the vegetable variety. Luckily, I have discovered a clever way to sneak extra fruits and vegetables into their diets deliciously disguised in smoothies. We have been drinking smoothies here for quite a while, but I recently got the opportunity to review a book on the art of smoothie making and juicing, something that I want to try.
201 Healthy Smoothies and Juices for Kids: Fresh, Wholesome, No-Sugar-Added Drinks Your Child Will Love published by F+W Media this month, shows how to improve your child’s health and wellness through great tasting and nutritious smoothies and fresh juices. With the help of Nicole Cormier, RD, LDN, Amy Roskelley brings you a guide packed to the gills with tasty alternatives to the sugar laden soft drinks, from concentrate juices, energy drinks and sports drinks that kids love. The ones that make kids bounce about the house like ping-pong balls and then leave them crashing a couple hours later after the buzz has worn off.
The authors don’t spend a lot of time explaining why this approach is healthy or a great choice for your family, which I appreciated. We know this is healthy – it’s fruit and vegetables, we know it’s the better choice – we just acknowledged it’s healthy. What they do do is break down the art of making a great smoothie. They give you helpful tips and hints to make your smoothie and juice making go as smoothly as possible. Then you get to the recipes. There is a chapter on breakfast drinks, drinks on the go, dessert drinks and my favorite – drinks with a purpose. The recipes in this chapter have specific benefits like boosting the immune system or digestive health.
All the recipes in this book look amazing but this one really stands out to me and it boosts immunity!
