Skin Care Therapy Preserving Africa’s Indigenous Beauty. For over a decade, Shea Terra Organics founder, Tammie Umbel, has been helping native Africans to preserve their wildlife habitats by sharing their indigenous, healing ingredients with the world.
Shea Terra Organics was created from a vision, a quest of sorts, to create markets from third world countries to help alleviate poverty stricken areas and to preserve diminishing habitats. As the Shea Butter Belt in Africa had tons of butter they could not sell do to low demand and high demand for it in other countries at expensive prices, Tammie Umbel became the mediator between them; creating an company that set new trends in the skin care industry. Realizing how this one ingredient made such a huge impact on the area, she sought out other rare ingredients and in doing so has helped to preserve natural habitats in Africa as well as created markets that would otherwise have not existed. This is such a remarkable story, at the heart of it, such a compassionate person that I am in many ways honored to have been given the opportunity to introduce you to them.
For the last few weeks I have been reviewing one of Shea Terra Organics new Hand & Body Lotions, Orange Blossom. Together with anti-aging, squalene rich argan and extra virgin olive oils to reverse signs of aging and decrease moisture loss, it is made with pure Moroccan orange blossom water and just a touch of orange. From the moment I opened the bottle and let loose a single drop into my hands, I smelled the morning. The morning as it dawns bright and full over the crest of trees in vivid orange and yellow hues, the swell and rise as the heat breaks free and dew-ly dresses the early hour landscape. Sometimes I close my eyes while routinely massaging it into my hands to imagine this, the blooming flower of dawn. I’ve never put too much faith in aromatherapy, which this isn’t exactly, but the scent somehow takes me away from everything going on to this imaginary place where the sun never ceases. And if I ever get stressed or anxiety ridden, I only have to breath it in to calm myself. I’m pretty sure that’s not exactly the use of this Hand & Body lotion, which is made with the rich ingredients for anti-aging, but this is something different I’ve found that I love so much about it.
I have an affection for Africa that stems from when I was a little girl. A deep love for a place I’ve never been but has never let that keep it from haunting my dreams. In many ways the Orange Blossom brings up these ideas of the colors there, deep bright hues under the blazing sun in elaborately woven jungles and sparse dry landscapes. I keep it next to my sink so that every morning when I wake up and wash my face I can rub in the imaginative memory and then throughout the day as I pick at my fingers in concentration or concern, if I stop I go to the bathroom and rub the Orange Blossom into my skin and breath in the dawn. It’s then that I wonder if other people have felt this way about differing scents from Shea Organics Hand & Body Lotions. Does the Moroccan Menthe Vanilla smell like the meadow? The Goat’s Milk Almond, does it smell like the fields in some faraway countryside? Or the Pomegranate Peach Tea, does it smell like the south in the summer when the peaches are ripe to bursting or when you open a fresh bruising Pomegranate and smell the seeds as they spill across the plate? There are so many, many scents, these are only a handful of dozens and I love them without having even experienced them, just as I love the vision the scent of Orange Blossom awakes me with. I suppose that’s not so much of a review as a revelation, I can’t just tell you these typical things or ingredients, I have to have you imagine it the way I experience it. But really, this company deserves your moments of consideration, to invite yourselves into their store and see what many products they offer that hold within them the ingredients from hard working people far away that were given the chance to offer them to you.
I was offered the chance to review the Orange Blossom Hand & Body Lotion and upon accepting I was told from the few other ladies here that had been given the chance previously with other products of how amazing and wonderful they are. So this is not just me, telling you, how incredible these products are – but all of us. You don’t have to take my word for it, please allow yourself the pleasure of purchasing one of their products and realizing for yourself that it doesn’t get much better than them. They are, in spirit of their work and in their products, the epitome of what I would expect a company seeking to beautify the world to be – something miraculous themselves. I hope you get the chance to see that.
