When I was 9 or 10, my little brother got a book for his birthday. Not just any book! This book had his name in it! Oh, I was SO jealous. Granted, it was about dinosaurs and I would have rathered a ballet or ponies book with my name in it. But, I would have loved to get a book about ME.
As a teacher, I know that nothing gets a child’s interest better than a story about themselves. I use children’s names in our math problems, in part of the morning message, and in group story writing. They can’t get enough (Let’s face it: kids are all pretty ego-centric. It is their world and we just live in it! :)).
