My husband and I just after completing our first Ragnar in 2009 |
February is the month of love. We buy chocolates, flowers, jewelry and more to help show each other how much we care. While, these are fabulous, there are more ways to show your love, and nurture your relationships. Today’s post reminds me of this quote from Legally Blonde, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t.” Yes, we all chuckle a bit when we hear that, but there is some truth there. Taking care of yourself CAN help you take care of your relationships. But even better, if you work toward fitness together, you will get the best of both worlds. Those happy endorphins, Elle was talking about in Legally Blonde, plus time together.
I have mentioned the Ragnar Relay several times over my Fitness Friday Posts, and one of the reasons I love it so much is that it is something my husband and I do together. We support each other during training (often running together when we are able) and we cheer each other on during the difficult times of the race. This time together is so much better than just dinner and a movie. Running a race like this makes you overcome difficult times, it really helps to have the support of someone you love along the way.
There are many ways that you can incorporate fitness into your relationship with your spouse. Talk together about goals that you both want to work towards. You can join a gym together. If childcare is an issue, find a gym that offers this service, or find another couple that wants to do the same, and offer to trade off babysitting. Something as simple as regularly walking together around your neighborhood can raise your heart rate and encourage conversation.
Schedule fitness focused date nights! Break out of the date night mold and find a fitness focused date night (or better yet, plan a Saturday Afternoon date). Grab some rackets and play a game of tennis or racquetball. Find a local aquatic center and swim laps; make it fun and race each other up and down the pool. Grab your bikes and find a pretty bike trail. There are so many options out there, you just have to be creative!
Love is in the air this month! Nurture that love by focusing on fitness together.
