Movie night is a big deal in our house. We bring out our projector, popcorn and treats while getting comfy in our favorite spots in the living room. Because the age range of my kids are 9 – 17 years old, it is very important that we watch movies that are appropriate to watch together. I love the fact that Walmart and P&G became partners to offer parents a family friendly option when it comes to entertainment. Game of Your Life is the latest movie release from Walmart and P&G.
“When industrious high school gamer Zach Taylor lands a prized scholarship to the prestigious Digital Institute of Game Design (DIGD), his future breaks wide open. The opportunity to study under gaming legend Marcus Bentton and alongside the country’s most creative minds will certainly propel him into a successful career as a video game designer. That is, if he can pass the infamous freshman project that eliminates more than half of the class within the first three months.”
Game of Your Life will air on NBC Friday December 2nd. I was recently given the opportunity to watch an advanced screening of it. The main character, Zach, wants to have a career in video game design. He is awarded a scholarship to the Digital Institute of Game Designs. While playing a game of checkers with his dad, it is easy to see Zach worries a lot about the their financial troubles. Zach’s dad tries to brush off any concerns, but Zach is very worried. It almost seems like Zach does not want to leave his dad.
Once Zach gets to school at the Digital Institute of Game Design, he finds out he will be staying off campus with two roommates. After orientation Zach is happy to see that one of his online friends, Sarah, also goes to the Digital Institute of Game Design. Zach’s team mates on the school project turn out to be both of his room mates and Sarah. Zach’s team gets started right away on the freshman project. Lea Thompson plays Professor Abbie, the person in charge of the freshman project. The rules of the design school is no consulting work on the side. It is mentioned more than once during the movie. This makes sense because all the students should be concentrating on their school work.
Zach and his team decide to build a social network game that will only be available to people on campus. They chose to name it My Choice. People around campus would be able to check in, make choices and see the consequences. Players would be able to see how one choice affects another person.
Eventually Zach is offered the opportunity to work under Marcus Bentton, but he was not sure if this was something he wanted to do. Zach wanted to think about it. That is understandable because Zach looks up to Marcus and would love to work with him. After a video call with his dad, Zach finds out that the bank did not approve their request to refinance. Zach confides in Sarah that his home is in trouble. He rushes over to Marcus to take him up on his offer. Over a virtual game of golf, Zach tells Marcus about the trouble going on with his family business. He has decided to take Marcus up on his offer. Zach quickly starts to burn the candle at both ends. It is much harder than he thought it would be working on the school project and doing the side job for Marcus.
This movie did a great job showing how the decisions you make in life do have an impact on those around you. Sometimes kids (and adults) think the choices they make only affects them. We enjoyed watching Game of Your Life. I think it was great for my kids to see a young adult facing a problem and reaching out to get help. I am not going to tell you how the movie ends, I want you to see it for yourself on December 2 on NBC.
