This past Tuesday, I was able to take my family to see the Yo Gabba Gabba! Live! tour – It’s Time To Dance in Buffalo, NY. And it was definitely time to dance!
The show started much like the t.v. show, DJ Lance Rock walked across the screen and set his boom box atop of Gabba land. It was then he “noticed” all of us having fun and wanted to join in. He then ran towards us and burst through a door in the screen. And Sonshine’s life will never be the same after that! He was totally stoked to see DJ Lance on stage, in person! It took him a few moments to register what was going on and by then, the screen was fully opened and his t.v. friends were there, in the flesh! (Or, I suppose, fur…plush?) The show kicked off with a big burst of energy and a big burst of confetti and streamers! And that’s how you get a kids attention! As Muno, Foofa, Brobee, Toodee, Plex and DJ Lance sang the name game to introduces themselves (and I’m pretty sure this is for the sake of any parents who work and don’t get to watch the show) a lot of the kids came to gather the streamers from the front rows. It was great, most of the kids then stayed on the wide stairs to dance and sing!

The “set list” was perfect, a great mixture of “new” and “old” songs. I enjoyed Muno’s song about his love for bugs, it had a fun, quirky hip-hop beat to it! During the first half, the crowd’s energy seemed a bit a low, I blame it for being a Tuesday afternoon and nothing to do with the entertainment. But, that soon changed when we all stood up and wiggled, shimmied, and shook all our sillies out! I’m pretty sure I saw more parents doing this dance than actually toddlers and big kids! Prior to the intermission, we saw Razzle Dazzle Superstar Leslie Hall, in all her golden spandex suit glory, (the one she wore on an episode of the t.v. show) who sang a song about friends and our special musical guests, The Pop Ups! Being someone and something new, the kids settled down at this point to watch the band. I thought they were great! They sing songs for kids in an 80’s synthesized sort of way. They also will be at the NYC shows, but after that, you’re on your own to guess your mystery music group! After the intermission, the show kicked into full gear with Sonshine’s favorite song! There’s A Party In My Tummy! Seriously, thank you Brobee, my kid would not eat as much without you! We had dancing food come down the aisles and Sonshine yelled out ‘carrots’ as they shimmed down past us! There was no calming down after this! We were treated to Biz Markie’s Bizes Beat of the Day. He even had a few kids on stage with him to bust out some beats. It was too adorable! Have you ever heard a kid do a beat? Grab yours and try it! You won’t regret it! We also had our special Dancey Dance guest: Kemba! For those of you not in the know, she is DJ Lance’s younger sister and also a DJ herself! She taught the kids a very 70’s inspired dance! And what’s a Yo Gabba Gabba! show without the Super Music Friends show?! This tour really lacked in nothing. Being over an hour long, it came down to being two episodes worth with the intermission! Perfect for tiny attention spans and those of us with a three hour long car ride home!
The other thing I really enjoyed was the actors themselves. They were spot on for each character, as they each have such distinctive personalities. Foofa is graceful, Muno is animated (just like a little boy I know) and so on, and none of them broke character. There were a few moments where some characters were not center stage and those in the background continued to be “themselves”. I’m glad the illusion was continued for the kids!
Well, as DJ Lance says each episode, “It’s almost time to go..” but first…
