The DK Publishing’s legendary Eyewitness Books have over 120 titles focusing on topics such as, space exploration, inventions, vikings, weather and the American Revolution. They’ve also grown to become the most trusted non-fiction books for kids. They’re specialized books are looked over by consultants and experts to make sure the information presented is correct and each book goes through a 5-6 month process of creating, editing and approval. This ensures each book is up to the standards of the company, the author and also us; the parents of the kids that love these books. It has sold over 30 million copies and is a standard book in libraries, schools and homes for over 30 years!
This summer DK is unveiling it’s newest titles and my family was honored with the chance to review two of them; Eyewitness: PREDATOR and Eyewitness: FLIGHT. Both of which are extremely appealing topics for kids. Although the books are considered the right ages for 8-12 year old’s, the photographs were eyepopping enough to catch my toddler’s attention and he loved flipping through the pages and seeing watch would come next. However, I got these books to review with my son Cody, he’s 13 and just started school a few weeks ago. He loves to read up on random facts and learn odd and different tidbits about things, so I really knew he’d enjoy these books.
The Eyewitness Books are hardbound books filled with information pertaining to the topic and photographs that spread out on the page like exquisitely placed confetti. Pictures that are captured from museum artifacts and ones they had photographed themselves all blend together beautifully. They also come with a Clip-Art CD, so you can download the images! This works wonderful for reports and essays; Cody is starting to get more of them now and they’re really helpful. Plus! It has Wall Art, a poster with all the different chapters and summaries, with larger photos! It’s a great piece to display on your wall, especially if you are a Home-School Home.
The Eyewitness: FLIGHT book is very interesting and starts out with a chapter called: “Flying Like a Bird” and shows old sketches from Leonardo Da Vinci’s sketchbook of flying contraptions that look a lot like Icarus. It’s pretty amazing seeing the history evolve into modern flight and how we now travel.
The Eyewitness: PREDATOR book is captivating; especially for a boy. All sorts of venomous, deadly, parasite, blood eating/cannibal animals and insects. With a teenager in love with Zombies, this book was his favorite and I got to hear all the nasty tid-bits of it for days. Vampire Birds and Cannibal Spiders… you name it.
These books are incredibly fascinating and I really think you will love them! Kid’s absolutely love to learn about the world around them, show it to them in an interesting (and kinda icky) way! If you aren’t sure, show them the interesting, “Did You Know” section on their webpage; finding out that water-bugs were in certain Chinese Foods in California was enough for me to want to figure out what else might be lurking in the Eyewitness: Insect book. Not interested in those… there are always Knights, Pirates and Gems! You’ll find something and learn a bit more about a topic than you ever thought you would.
