Lifetime is premiering the all-new hour-long drama series, The Protector, starring Ally Walker (Sons of Anarchy, Profiler) as a divorced single mother and detective in the LAPD homicide division this Sunday, June 12, at 10:00 PM ET/PT following the fifth season finale of Army Wives.
The Protector centers on divorced mother Gloria Sheppard (Walker), who juggles her demanding personal and professional life as an intuitive LAPD homicide detective while raising two boys, Leo (Thomas Robinson, Heroes) and Nick (Sage Ryan, The Closer), with the live-in help of her troubled younger brother Davey (Chris Payne Gilbert, Dexter, Bones). The series also stars Tisha Campbell-Martin (Rita Rocks, My Wife and Kids) as Gloria’s partner Michelle Dulcett, Miguel Ferrer (Crossing Jordan, Traffic) as their boss Lieutenant Felix Valdez and Terrel Tilford (One Life to Live) as police officer Ramon Romeo Rush.
I am a huge fan of T.V. crime dramas. I have actually seen every episode of Law & Order (the original, SVU and CI) up until 2009 where my youngest sons birth hindered my obsession. So when given the chance to review Lifetime’s new crime drama, I was excited! What fascinated me was that Walker’s character, Gloria, is a Mother of two boys and although I love my old crime dramas, none of the ones I ever watched combined the difficulties of raising children (especially as a single parent) with being a homicide detective. Having two boys myself I cannot imagine what it must be like.
The Protector had a nice balance of comedy to offset the drama, as Walker’s character is quirky at times and Trisha Campbell-Martin has a natural ability to make you laugh at the simplest things. The show begins as any other Mother’s day begins, with Gloria (Walker) trying to get her children ready for school. The rest follows an almost typical plot line of crime dramas except for the fact that while the crime is being solved Gloria must also pull together a theater costume for her youngest son and resolve a misunderstanding with her troubled brother. There is a natural ebb and flow of family life with the work life of a homicide detective which I enjoyed very much. I would definitely rate this show as a must-see for Moms! So make sure you set your DVR (as I had) or find a comfy couch this Sunday for The Protectors premier. The beginning will make you laugh and the end will make you tear up, then you’ll be hooked for the rest of the season.
