Times x Two is in essence a story about a magazine executive meeting a rockstar, falling in love and starting a family. This wouldn’t be very unique if it had been anyone other than Sarah Kate Ellis and Kristen Henderson. The tremendous amount of love that pours through this book is all consuming. I followed them through the early parts of their lives with a curious feeling and then when Kristen’s band got their first record deal, I secretly cheered to myself, but when Sarah loses her first baby I hugged the book and whispered my condolences. There are people that have a way of reaching you through the written word as if they were face to face, telling you a story or talking to you about their day and that is exactly how Times x Two was written. I wasn’t alone in my living room sitting on my couch with a book, I was sitting and listening to Sarah and Kristen tell me how they found themselves, how they first met and how they first knew they wanted to spend their lives together. They explained how it felt trying to conceive when everything was against them, and how they made it through such great loss; it taught me of what it really means to hope.
The book becomes really interesting when Sarah and Kristen decide to try and increase their chances of getting pregnant after Sarah had miscarried and the dozens of negatives they had received. By a miraculous turn of events they both become pregnant days apart, with due dates back to back and with the same donor. This is not only a story about the unique family they made through the love they had for each other, but how they survived being two pregnant women with all the weight of hormones and excessive mood swings. With opinionated Mother’s thrown into the mix and both having serious careers (Sarah as a magazine executive and Kristen in the band Antigone Rising), this is simply an amazing story written by two very different, humorous and intelligent women. A first time parent book, a book about the obstacles of being a gay couple, a book about the difficulties of conceiving and ultimately a book about love. Love between friends, Love between spouses and the all consuming love you experience as a Mother, Times x Two.
