My husband and I were both very excited when I was given the opportunity to review the new Human Planet 3 disc DVD/Blu-ray set that premiered April 17th on the Discovery Channel. Human Planet is the first BBC/Discovery Channel co-production to focus solely on human behavior. I am not a huge TV junkie but I absolutely love this kind of television and knew this would be fantastic.
“ New York – February 22, 2011 – This April, the focus will turn to humanity’s amazing, complex and profound relationship with nature as BBC Earth’s groundbreaking DVD and Blu-ray Disc release Human Planet hits retail. The series earned rave reviews from audiences and critics in the UK, with The Telegraph proclaiming, ?It’s like nothing you?ve ever seen before,? and the Sun saying it’s ?visually stunning and utterly fascinating, this is seriously impressive stuff.? Arriving in stores on April 26, just two days following the series? conclusion on Discovery Channel, Human Planet is the first BBC/Discovery Channel production to focus entirely on human behavior.
Series producer Dale Templar commented: ?This series rediscovers the unique and critical relationship that still exists between us and the natural world. Human Planet is a breathtaking celebration of how human beings have adapted to live with nature at its most extreme.?
BBC Earth’s award-winning natural history programs, including Life, Planet Earth and Blue Planet, have revealed the state of the planet and how its remarkable creatures survive like never before. Human Planet weaves together 80 stories, many never told before, to illuminate humanity’s uncanny ability to adapt and live in every corner of our diverse world. Each episode centers on a particular habitat, and by using innovative and cutting edge filming techniques, reveals how its people have created astonishing solutions in the face of extreme adversity.
From Greenland to Mongolia, Cambodia to Kenya, people are living by their wits – braving the elements, seizing opportunities and overcoming obstacles to survive and thrive. Whether it’s a line of women and children who use star and sand dune patterns to traverse the Sahara in order to trade dates and find water from a single well; or children in Kenya who hunt for honey with birds as their guides while braving trees buzzing with killer bees; humans find a way to endure.
From executive producer Brian Leith (Wild China, Ganges) and series producer Dale Templar, the series is presented by John Hurt (Harry Potter, Merlin) and features a globally-influenced soundtrack by award-winning composer Nitin Sawhney and was documented by award winning photographer Timothy Allen. BBC Books has released, Human Planet – Nature’s Greatest Human Stories, a companion guide for the series written by producers Dale Templar and Brian Leith and featuring photography by Timothy Allen. The hardcover book, which tells spellbinding stories to explore man’s unique relationship with his surroundings, is now available in North America. “
My husband and I were both just amazed at the ability of so many to adapt to their surroundings and survive in habitats that really are beyond anything we could ever conquer. It is really so hard to choose a favorite story because there are 80 of them highlighted in this production. I think my favorite highlight would be about the isolated communities, which they estimate numbering around 40, within the Brazilian rain forest. Many of these communities have never had contact with the outside world and their way of life is threatened by the logging industry. It is truly astonishing to me that there are still undiscovered tribes within the jungles of South America. Many critics dispute the existence of these people and they discuss the importance of protecting these individuals from the rest of the world.
So many of these types of productions focus on animals so I found it very refreshing to see the focus shifting to humans and how we adapt and interact with nature and our surroundings. From the Arctic where Inuits struggle with shrinking and unstable ice to the deserts of the Sahara where women and their children set out on 3 day voyages through the desert where their only way of navigation is counting sand dunes to find the only well available to them and if they are 1 sand dune off, death is a possibility. I found the videography absolutely stunning and loved watching the Behind the Lens “making of” bonus features. When you watch this you don’t realize the incredible obstacles that the producers face in capturing this footage so I truly enjoyed this feature and it made me appreciate the program so much more after realizing what goes into making these productions. When they were filming the Arctic episode in which they are following the lives of Inuit whale hunters, they actually found themselves in a life threatening situation. The ice had opened up and they were floating out to sea on a massive sheet of ice. You can literally feel the intensity of the situation and the fear the filming crew are experiencing on the footage. You feel like you are right there on the ice with them and a wave of relief overcomes you when they finally do make it to safety.
You will not walk away disappointed in the DVD/Blu-ray release of Human Planet. It is incredibly entertaining, educational and will open your mind to the various struggles, obstacles and dilemma’s to survive that many humans across our planet face and how they have adapted to their enviroment.
