Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the 3rd DVD in the Narnia Film series and also the 3rd book published by C.S. Lewis, although technically it is 5th if placed in chronological order. It begins with Lucy and Edmond Pevensie arguing with their cousin Eustace before being swallowed into a painting that transports them back to Narnia. There they join King Caspian and the noble mouse Reepicheep aboard the grand ship The Dawn Treader. Although the main plot of the story surrounds around the evil of the dark island and the mysterious mist which they must confront in order to save Narnia, Eustace’s personal story is more realized.
A snobby, spoiled child that believes himself to be incredibly intelligent and that had believed his cousins to be ignorant and unrealistic, finds himself in a world where he is the outcast and where his knowledge is lost. Cast aside as a whimpering week fool, the noble mouse Reepicheep sees something in Eustace that the others do not and seeks to bring it out. Each character in The Dawn Treader must face their weaknesses, but more so Eustace. In the end he proves that sometimes the least likely characters can surprise you, sometimes the smallest of us do the greatest things.
I am more of a book person and had loved the Narnia series since I was a little girl, however the film series has shown the beauty of this world 3 times over now and each time with just a bit more of it’s magnificence. I think C.S. Lewis would be proud of how these films had brought his world to life, especially Aslan to whom we all so dearly love. Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is catered more to my sons age than my own and isn’t as well scripted as the first two movies in my opinion, but it was no less enjoyable and it held my son’s excitement throughout. Now that Narnia is saved once again we can wait for the 4th installment with great anticipation where they go back to the very beginning and show us how it all began.
Until then you can pick up Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader DVD for $17.99 on Amazon.
