Adina’s Deck is an amazing award winning Internet Safety DVD designed for classrooms that educates young people on the emerging problems of Cyber Bullying/Harrasment, Online Predators and Plagiarism. It was designed as a masters thesis for the Learning, Design and Technology program at Stanford University, by Debbie Hemowitz and Jason Azicri. After testing over 150 students between the ages of 10-15 the results showed a significant improvement regarding the knowledge of these topics to young people.
I watched Adina’s Deck with my son Cody who is 13 and spends a LOT of time on the computer. Last year he and his friends were playing a popular online multi-player game for kids when one of his friends started talking with a girl from the game. It took a week to realize that girl was actually an adult male and it frightened me as a parent to think what would have happened if that were my son? What if he had given out our telephone number or address? We had a long discussion that day on the dangers of Online Predators. We’ve talked about Cyber-Bullying as well, since he plays a lot of multi-player shoot up games and boys can be just as rough as girls to each other. I was so thankful to get a chance to review Adina’s Deck with him. Although he said it was a little girly to begin with we both enjoyed the way it felt like a movie. He had actually said that it was almost as thrilling as the movie “Scream” when they were trying to figure out who the cyber bully was.
I feel that this DVD is incredibly important, not only for my son but for educators, schools and young children everywhere. The episodes are filmed in a way that is appealing, the issues are important on such an intense magnitude and it helps to relate to the every growing problems our children are facing. I felt it was so important, in fact, that after watching my review Adina’s Deck Cyber-Bullying DVD I donated it to my son’s school Library with information on how to obtain the others which are just as important. You should consider presenting information and/or the link to Adina’s Deck to your child’s school so that perhaps they can center a program around these arising issues.
