I love fresh cut flowers. Not only do they look beautiful, they make your house smell amazing too! Buying a pre-made bouquet or basket of flowers from a florist is easy. But did you know that it’s almost as easy, not to mention much cheaper, to make your own? Well it is and I made this flower basket for around $10 by re-using a tin basket from my bridal shower!
Most local grocers have a floral section and mine happens to have a decent variety of flowers to choose from. They even have bunches of flowers such as Daisies, Lilies, Baby’s Breath and other types of wildflowers for just a few bucks a bunch. You can get 3 bunches for about $12 and I used a little over half of each for this flower basket.
You’ll need the following items to make one of your own:
- Decorative basket, or even a deeper decorative cereal bowl
- Floral foam, cut to size to fit basket
- Paper grass
- Fresh flowers
Now there are a few stems of flowers in each bunch, but one stem has lots of smaller stems coming off it so it’s actually a small “bunch” of flowers. So you’ll grab a bunch that you want for the middle, poke the stem into the foam and grab a bunch of a different color/type of flower and poke one stem into the foam on each side of the middle bunch.
Next, you’ll grab 2 bunches of the third type of flower, and poke each of them through the foam on the other sides of the middle bunch. You’ll continue alternating bunches in a way that looks best to you, making the bunches shorter as you get to the sides of your basket.
Continue going around the basket with bunches of flowers until you’ve either used them all or your basket is full. Set them on a table or the fireplace mantel and enjoy! Or gift them to someone you love! A fresh basket of flowers would be a nice gift to take along when visiting someone in the hospital or even as a hostess gift.
