With a family full of hungry guys, I’m always looking for new things to try. I enjoy getting creative in the kitchen, challenging myself to create meals that they’ll all find tasty. All of the boys were home the other day for lunch and sandwiches can be so boring, so I thought I’d put a delicious, yet filling twist on one of their favorites – grilled cheese.

I’d heard about these new Hillshire Farms Naturals lunchmeats and wanted to give them a try. With no artificial preservatives, ingredients or nitrates, I thought these 100% natural lunchmeats would be a great choice for my family. I chose the Black Forest Ham because it’s slow roasted in its own juices, then naturally smoked and I just love that hardwood flavor.
So back to my delicious creation. These Cheesy Ham Melts turned out simply amazing and nothing short of absolutely delicious. They were so good in fact, that my husband requested Cheesy Ham Melts and soup for diner just a few days later. And, he helped me name this recipe, so I’ve got to give him credit for that as well!
You’ll need the following ingredients for each Cheesy Ham Melt you plan to make. If you have a large family like mine, I recommend using a griddle because it will save you a lot of time.
- 2 – 3/4 inch slices of Italian bread – I bought mine from the bakery and sliced it myself to get nice thick cuts
- 3 slices of American cheese, combination of white and orange, halved
- 5 slices Hillshire Farms Naturals Black Forest Ham
- butter for melting
- garlic
Place 3 slices of Hillshire Farms Naturals Black Forest Ham on top of the bread slice with the white American cheese.
To with more American cheese, whichever color you want. Then place two slices on ham on top of the orange American cheese that’s on the other piece of bread. Grill for a few minutes, then flip one slice of bread onto the other and sprinkle lightly with garlic. Grill for 2 minutes, flip and sprinkle garlic onto the other side of the sandwich. Grill for 2 minutes, flip again. The sandwiches should have a nice golden color and the cheese should be melted. If not, just grill for a few more minutes, flipping so the sandwich cooks evenly.
When they’re finished, slice and enjoy with a skewered pickle!
I will never look at another grilled cheese sandwich the same again, after trying this Cheesy Ham Melt. It’s definitely one to add to the book if your family enjoys grilled cheese and ham!
