- clean dry jars
- 1 T glue (I used modge podge that I had, but I think plain white glue works too!)
- 1/2 T water
- 7-9 drops liquid food coloring (the gel works too, but it changes the consistency of the mix, so you’d need to play around with the other numbers to balance)
- paper towels and a cookie sheet
- oven set to 225 (or warm) ?
Now the steps are pretty easy.
Step 1: Mix up the glue, water, and food coloring. Be careful not to use too much food coloring, it will make the jars streaky (too much water).
Step 2: Pour the mixture into a glass jar. Here is my fancy apple juice jar!
Step 3: Swirl the mixture around until the jar is covered. Dump the excess. Then place upside down to dry for 1 hour.
Step 4: Carefully wipe the rim of the jar to remove any excess. It will look gross if you don’t. Turn the oven to 225 (or warm) and place the jars on the cookie sheet to bake for 45 minutes (or until the glue is dry and they are transparent). Let them dry completely before you handle them, they are hot!
I used my yellow one as an outdoor solar light with the cool lid I bought (you can buy one here).
Or you could use it to hold things like paintbrushes! If you want your jar to hold fresh cut flowers, put a smaller clear jar inside to hold the water in. The color will wash right off of these jars!
Now, in all honesty my jars didn’t come out as I would have liked. But since I was up til midnight – I wasn’t about to re-do them that night. But b/c the color washes off with soap and water I can wash out the blue jar and try again until I am happy with the finished product. So no more throwing out your first few tries!
I can’t wait to hear about how your jars turn out!
Happy Crafting!
