It should come as no surprise to most of you that my family in pretty big into hunting. I come from a family of hunters and so does The Man. That being said, gun safety is second nature to the both of us. We’ve had guns in our homes since we can remember and still do to this day. We’ve taught our kids about gun safety since they could walk and talk. They always knew to stay away from the gun cabinet and they would certainly never try to open it. Of course, it is always locked too because that’s the safe way to keep guns in your house. I think it’s important that we taught them gun safety at such an early age because there have to be rules when it comes to handling guns; for their safety and for the safety of others.
Pretty soon, these boys will get to share in our family hunting tradition themselves. They’ll be hunting with their dad, uncles and other family/friends in no time. But of course, you can’t just put a rifle or shotgun in the hands of a kid their first time handling a gun. That’s why their first gun to handle was a BB gun that came from my brothers, a Daisy Red Rider BB Gun. Our dad got it for them when they were younger. Since my father is no longer with us, that BB gun is a family heirloom that will be treasured forever.
They boys have been wanting another BB gun, so that’s why I was super excited to be one of the bloggers chosen for the #bb4me campaign for Social Fabric. I wanted to make this special so I surprised the boys with a trip to Walmart after school. Lil Man wasn’t too thrilled at first, until we hit the sporting goods section. Once we started looking at the Daisy Outdoor products, they both eyeballed the BB guns right away. They were pretty thrilled when I told them that’s what we were at Walmart for!
I planned a fun day for all the boys, some good ole’ target practice. We got everything that we would need for our outdoor family activities. They got a new Daisy Red Rider BB gun, some BB’s and a target. You can see our Daisy Family Fun shopping trip here.
We went outside and The Man put the stickers onto the target, then set it up at the end of the hill. That way, the hill would stop any stray BB’s that missed the target.
Each of them took turns shooting at the target. Lil Man found it easier to lie down while shooting since the target was so low to the ground.
Of course the rest of the boys got a chance to shoot it too, including Dad! They had such a fun time. I even had fun capturing all the moments in photos too!
Daisy brand BB guns have always appealed to us because of the quality in the workmanship. Take a look the photo above for instance. The top gun is the new one, the bottom is about 10 years old. It looks a little faded compared to the new one, but that could be a completely different color stain too. There are some nicks and scratches as well as a little bit of wear and tear, but for the most part the old BB gun works just as good as when it was new.

10 Shooting Safety Rules
Airguns are real guns, not toys. You or others can be killed or seriously injured if these rules are not followed.
- Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
- Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
- Only load or cock a gun when you are shooting.
- Check your target and beyond your target.
- Anyone shooting or near a shooter should wear shooting glasses.
- Never climb or jump with a gun.
- Avoid ricochet.
- Keep the muzzle clear.
- Guns not in use should always be unloaded.
- Respect other people’s property.
