When you have kids, life changes. You not only have yourself to look after, but there’s a tiny little life that relies on you for everything from clothing and food to keeping them safe. But what many people don’t realize is that there are dangers in our homes that we need to be aware of. These things are often overlooked, but can cause serious harm to those we hold closest to our hearts.
Some of the everyday dangers in our homes include button cell batteries, TidePods capsules, alcohol, medications and cosmetics. I’ve shared an infographic below that tells more about everyday poisons in our homes. But before reading further, take this quick survey for a chance to win 1 of 3 monthly $250 Amazon gift cards.
Now I have nearly all of those items in my house and I’ve stocked the majority of them for years. I’ve known the dangers, so I kept things up high or out of reach of my kids’ little hands. But not everyone knows to do that and even more people don’t realize how dangerous these things can be.
Take TidePods for instance. The journal Pediatrics did a study on laundry detergent pods and found that about every hour, one child is poisoned. This is especially common in children under the age of 6 and from 2012-2013, 17,230 children were injured, 700 were seriously sickened and at least one child died – all from laundry detergent pods. 75% of these incidents involved children under 3 years old and 80% of the injuries occurred because the child swallowed detergent.
The problem with these pods is that they have a highly-concentrated formula with a higher amount of surfactant compared to regular detergent. The fact that they’re brightly colored and sweet smelling means that children can mistake them for candy and before you know it, you’ve got a major problem on your hand. I know they’re convenient and in fact I have used these type of pods. But with any kind of thing that can be poisonous to a child, be cautious and keep them up high, out of reach.
