Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom follows two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore ? and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in every which way.
Wes Anderson is back with his new idiosyncratic movie, Moonrise Kingdom. True to his earlier styles (Tenenbaums – Rushmore), it is deeply rich in expression and holds your heart as it takes you to a place of escape and young love.
There is the typical quirkiness in regards to the characters, each of them having their own inner struggles that all seem to come to an impasse when two slightly strange children meet and run away together. The beauty of this film goes beyond just the scenery and videography, I found myself being captured by the long moments of silent stares and vibrant styles and colors from the era. You would never guess in a million years that it was Kara Hayward’s (Suzy) and Jared Gilman’s (Sam) first real acting job. I was actually stunned when I read that Kara Hayward went from acting in a play in summer camp to being chosen at a casting call for this film. The level of maturity needed to play these two troubled young tweens was something to reach, they met that and took me beyond my expectation. Simply superb acting. These two are going to be a force in the industry.
Moonrise Kingdom stars some of Hollywood’s favorites as well! Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman!
I loved this movie. I’m a fan of a lot of Wes Anderson’s earlier work and this was a breath of fresh air after some of his latest releases. It had a lot of heart, was very witty, creatively made with multiple levels to both the characters as well as the story. There was one scene with the young 12 year olds in love on the beach that made me raise my brow as a parent, but it was pulled off well. The symbolism far outweighed my original perception. It is most certainly an adventure, but for adults peering into our inner selves.
